Title: The Interplay Between Methods Within the Numerical Solution of Nonlinear Time-Dependent Partial Differential Equations

Abstract: The numerical solution of time-dependent partial differential equations by a method of lines approach involves also methods for time-stepping for the system of ODEs, a nonlinear Newton solver, and iterative linear solvers. Each of these relies on tunable parameters, whose interplay has potentially significant effect on the overall cost of each simulation. We present results for a sample problem of long-time simulations for a model of calcium waves in a heart cell. In addition, we will present results of parallel performance studies using the new cluster maya in the UMBC High Performance Computing Facility. This project is joint work with Dr. Gobbert, Xuan Huang, Samuel Khuvis, Matthew Brewster, Dr. Peercy, and Zana Coulibaly.
