Title: Mathematical Modeling in Complex Media
Abstract: Many problems of current interest require models that span many scales in time and space, several areas of physics, involve uncertainty and noise, and often suffer from sparsity of field data. I will describe some of the mathematical challenges multi-scale/multi-physics problems present in the context of two concrete problems: laser beam propagation in the maritime domain and sea ice dynamics in the Arctic.
