Faculty Group Wins Hrabowski Fund for Innovation Award

$10,000 for redesign of Math 155

The Fall 2014 Hrabowski Fund for Innovation has awarded an implementation grant of $10,000 to the department for the redesign of MATH 155 (Applied Calculus) using active team-based learning.

Elizabeth Stanwyck, Raji Baradwaj, Brian Dean, and Matthias Gobbert received the award for a pilot study in Spring and Fall 2015. This redesign leverages the skills of todays college-age generation of digital literacy and just-in-time learning by turning them into strengths in the learning of foundational mathematics. The novel components include the use of online lectures and a TA-guided active team-based seminar. The redesign is integrated with other initiatives in the department, notably QuizZero and the Math Gym.

An analogous redesign of Math 150 (Pre-Calculus) in Fall 2013, funded by USM, showed the feasibility and power of the approach to improve student learning outcomes.
