Title: A Primer on Data Assimilation
Abstract: This is an expository talk, accessible to graduate students. We will introduce a class of commonly used data assimilation algorithms called approximate Gaussian filters in the context of nonlinear turbulent dynamical systems. This class of data assimilation techniques includes commonly used schemes such as nudging, 3DVar, ensemble Kalman filter, and ensemble square root Kalman filter. We will only assume knowledge of Math 225, Math 600 and Math 603. Knowledge of Math 612 (graduate ODE) and some knowledge of statistics and probability (e.g. the concept of distributions and random variables, conditional probability and expectation and the multivariate normal distribution) is desirable but not essential.
We encourage all faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates interested in differential equations to attend.
