Tom Seidman retired in January 2017 after 45 years of wide-ranging contributions to UMBC and the worldwide mathematics community.

You are invited to a departmental event on Wednesday, May 17 to celebrate Tom's new Professor Emeritus title.  Jay Alexander and Stuart Antman, two of the many Tom's collaborators, will give mathematical talks accessible to non-specialists in the afternoon. A wine-and-cheese reception and a dinner will follow.  Here is the detailed schedule of events:
2:30–3:30
Talk  in room MP 104 by Dr. Stuart Antman
Title: The Virtues of Ignorance in the Applications of Mathematics
3:45–4:45
Talk in room MP 104 by Dr. Jay Alexander
Title: Sliding modes for intersecting switching surfaces:  a study of discontinuous differential equations  (Joint work with Tom)
4:50–5:50
Wine & Cheese reception in room MP 420
6:30–
Dinner at the Kings Contrivance Restaurant in Columbia.  The $50 prix fixe dinner includes appetizer, entrée, dessert, soft drinks, tea or coffee, gratuities and tax.  A cash bar is available.
