Title: Infusing Quantitative Modeling Into Introductory Biology Courses

Abstract:  The National Academy of Science, Association of American Medical Colleges, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science have all funded studies and reports that call for a change in the undergraduate biology curriculum towards a more quantitative and interdisciplinary approach. Specifically, the MCATs are changing their format in 2015 to reflect these changes. As a result, HHMI has funded the National Experiment in Undergraduate Science Education (NEXUS), a consortium of universities (UMBC, UMCP, Purdue, and U. of Miami) to produce educational materials that will assist colleges and universities in morphing their undergraduate teaching to encompass competencies and skills, rather than topics and algorithms. The UMBC team has focused on developing modules for first year biology courses that bring more quantitative skills and questions into the curriculum. Drs. Leips, Leupen, and Hoffman will present the modules that have been developed at UMBC, as well as the projects from other universities in the consortium, and  describe the assessment methods, data and results from the UMBC modules.
