Title: Mobile Edge Clouds: Exploring the Possibilities
Speaker: Rolando Martins
Abstract: In a world where smartphone usage is pervasive, can we leverage their full potential? Modern System-on-Chips (SoCs) are capable of delivering 5000 times the computing power of a CRAY-2 supercomputer. However, are we harnessing this power to its fullest extent? This talk will demonstrate how we can securely create mobile edge clouds through the opportunistic crowdsourcing of mobile devices. We will showcase two key application cases: enhancing spectator experiences in stadiums and arenas with seamless streaming and real-time computation during events, and addressing critical needs in search and rescue or military operations by enabling rapid, decentralized data processing that impacts decision-making and response times. Additionally, we will discuss associated challenges, particularly in developing models that handle uncertainty. These challenges can lead to more effective algorithmic approaches for content dissemination and computation localization.
