Title: Mathematics & Advocacy
Speaker: Karen Saxe, American Mathematical Society
Abstract: My DC-based Office of Government Relations represents the American Mathematical Society in science policy discussions at the federal level. Central to our work is advocacy for increased and stable federal funding for mathematics research and education, and around other policies that affect mathematicians and students (examples include taxes that affect students and institutions of higher education, and policies that promote underrepresented minorities in STEM fields). Come hear about our priorities, how we do this work, and how students and faculty members can get involved. One of our active areas is a focus on how mathematics and statistics are used in redistricting and part of the talk will give an update on this, and the current court cases examining accusations of gerrymandering.
