In the era of real world evidence and big data, observational research is a critical component for generating evidence the effectiveness of health and policy interventions on population health outcomes. Administrative databases offer many advantages for answering important population health outcomes related questions and for testing novel methodological approaches. Access to these data on a national level is often difficult to obtain and can be cost-prohibitive. The goals of this presentation are to 1) provide an overview of the administrative data available in the Department of Pharmaceutical Health Services Research, 2) illustrate case examples of research that has been conducted with these data, and 3) discuss opportunities for collaborations across the University of Maryland campuses. The first half of the presentation will describe the data sources available, the populations covered, and the accessibility of these data for health services and policy researchers. The second half of the presentation will provide an overview of the three research projects conducted using these databases. The session will conclude with an open discussion of the opportunities for collaboration on research papers, preliminary analyses for grant applications, and for testing novel methods in large data.
