Title: Exploring the Nonlinear Responses of Inextensible Beams and Plates to Nonconservative Forces
Abstract: From an engineering perspective, geometric primitives such as beams and plates can be used to accurately model complex systems such as missiles and airplane wings with great computational efficiency. In this talk, we will derive from first principles novel nonlinear continuum beam and plate models under the constraint of inextensibility. We will explore several physically relevant boundary and loading conditions, including a simplified model of a trailing edge control surface of a supersonic aircraft. Finally, new and interesting nonlinear dynamical behaviors will be discussed, which result from the coupling of a novel high-speed, nonlinear aerodynamic model with this new nonlinear structural model.
