Description

Title:  Long-Time Simulations of Partial Differential Equations
on Modern Parallel Computing Platforms

Abstract:  The UMBC High Performance Computing Facility (HPCF http://www.umbc.edu/hpcf)
has now equipment worth more than $1.5M,
including state-of-the-art Intel Ivy Bridge CPUs and
NVIDIA graphics processing units (GPUs),
and cutting-edge 60-core Intel Phi accelerators.
I will use long-time simulations of calcium waves in heart cells
as an exciting example of collaborative research and to introduce
the need for parallel computing and the great
opportunities for research using the new equipment.
This talk provides a basic introduction that explains
the hardware and equipment from the ground up and
will be useful for anyone interested in computing.
