Description

Title:  What mathematics education research can (and cannot) tell us about the teaching of proof

Abstract: The purpose of this talk is to discuss how the existing body of mathematics education research can productively inform the way that proof is taught to university mathematics majors. This talk will have two parts. The first part of the talk will review the literature on the teaching of proof at the university level. During this review, I will discuss major themes in the literature that can inform the design of instruction as well as important issues that are in need of further research. The second part of the talk will discuss innovative teaching practices that have been demonstrated to improve student achievement as well as common teaching practices that research have shown to be problematic.
