William Gao is a finalist in the Regeneron Talent Search
Centennial High School student is awarded $25,000
William Gao, a senior in the Centennial High School, has been selected as one of the 40 finalists in the 2024 Regeneron Science Talent Search from among more than 2,000 entrants. Each finalist was awarded a $25,000 prize.
William was mentored by Dr. Yi Huang, an Associate Professor at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at UMBC. Their research led to the development of an artificial intelligence-driven, resource-efficient, mobile diagnostic system to identify cancerous regions in patient tumor samples. Their findings were published in an article in Cancer Informatics:

Finalists will further participate in a week-long competition in March 2024, during which they will undergo a rigorous judging process that goes beyond their own research to encompass other scientific disciplines and compete for more than $1.8 million in awards.
